How To Train Any Dog Any Time
Sometimes it may feel as though you brought home Cujo instead of Lassie! With some basic training, you can teach your dog to act better quicker.
Take small steps when crate training your dog. After they become used to each individual step and do not mind going inside the crate, try shutting the door and giving them treats with the door closed. Use small increments of time, and build them up as your puppy or dog becomes more relaxed with the process. If you notice the animal becoming tense or confused, you are probably proceeding too quickly.
Establish feeding habits for your dog. Feed your dog at the same times every day, so that he knows what to expect. Your dog will soon become accustomed to his feeding schedule and eat quickly.
You will have to repeat commands several times before your dog learns it. It isn’t unusual to have to repeat a trick dozens of times before the dog understands. Try using the command more often and be very patient if you want your dog to learn.
Never reinforce your dog’s bad behaviors. Withhold treats and attention when your dog exhibits any undesirable behaviors. If your dog leaps on you when you return home and you wish to discourage this behavior, you must ignore him and go about your business. Even negative attention from you can cause the behavior to continue.
Choosing the correct crate size is extremely important. Keep in mind that they get larger as they age. Find a crate big enough for your adult dog. The dog must have enough room to lie down and turn around without getting crowded.
It is very easy to teach a pooch to roll over as long as you have some tasty treats on hand. First, have your pet to lay down. Next, hold the treat close to the floor on one side of the dog’s head, and slowly bringing it upwards and over to the dog’s other side. He should follow the treat with his nose, causing him to roll his whole body over. Say “roll over” as you perform the maneuver. Be patient while he masters this trick. He will be a star once he does!
Do not reinforce any negative behaviors accidentally. Never give your dog any treats or special attention for doing bad things. This includes things like petting them when they jump on you at the door.
When training dogs, use a similar tone and volume when you give commands. This will let him know you are serious and he needs to listen. You should also work on developing different tones to use in different situations. For example, you can have a sharp one for disciplinary purposes, and a firm, but not-as-sharp one for simple commands.
Let your dog have more freedom as he or she starts to behave and listen to commands more. You will find your dog to be more obedient and your dog will be happier. Just be careful that you don’t give your dog too much freedom, as this can cause negative behavior.
It is important to get your dog trained to walk nicely on his leash. This helps keep both you and your dog safe when going on walks.
You should never do long sessions of training. By keeping the sessions short you will be able to hold your dog’s attention. Instead, have multiple, short sessions with breaks for playtime in between.
Training Sessions
Your dog needs to learn what the word “no” means. Find positive and supportive ways to train your furry friend. Just simply telling your dog ‘no’ doesn’t help him or her in understanding how to properly react. Each dog is unique and has unique requirements. Training should be geared towards their needs and personality.
Your training sessions should be very short. Dogs don’t have long attention spans so make sure that your training sessions are kept short. You can choose to adopt a more intensive regimen, but only if you are willing to allow your dog a few moments of relaxation and play to break up the session.
Make sure that you let your dog get used to people regularly. Your dog needs to know how to act around other dogs and humans, and frequent socialization is the only way to teach these skills. This also helps to avoid hyper-activity in a new location.
When you travel with a dog, you need to anticipate all of its needs to help it avoid unwanted behaviors or accidents. Include water, food bowls, bathroom bags and paper towels, so you can have a relaxing ride. Do not worry about taking a bag of their dog food with you; it is much easier to pick some up when you get to your destination.
Anxiety is what can cause a dog to chew things up. Using a dog gate to set aside his own space or a crate to confine his nervousness may provide him with the security he needs while you are away, and adding a chew toy may redirect some of his destructive tendencies.

You must correct you dog each and every time he misbehaves, as well as reward the dog for correct behavior. Everyone in your house needs to enforce these strict rules. This can undo any progress you have made.
Regular challenges will keep your dog from losing his chops. Get him to repeat tricks you haven’t practiced in a while, to keep him sharp.
Although it can be very difficult at times, patience should always be used with your dog. Your dog doesn’t understand English, and they’re not a person. An animal cannot grasp your thoughts and can only interpret your tone and nonverbal cues like gestures and facial expressions to some degree. Maintain a sense of calm, and take a break if your frustration level rises during training.
Don’t use punitive methods to train your dog. Try to make every attempt to prevent any bad behavior before it happens, but if misbehavior happens, then show him what you wanted him to do. You should make training a time to interact with your dog, you want to build a positive relationship with him.
Stop your puppy immediately if he is chewing on something he shouldn’t. This teaches your puppy what is acceptable to chew, making it less likely that he will chew your belongings when you are not able to watch him closely.
When training your dog, it is best that you give them treats whenever they do what you’re telling them to do. After they get used to it, try giving them treats a lot less.
Do not neglect to make a visit to the vet for a spay or neuter around the six month mark. This really should be done prior to the start of obedience classes. Spaying or neutering your dog will make a more enjoyable pet and also a better student. By spaying or neutering a dog he will have a longer happier life.
Dog agility is not suited for all breeds, so research a bit beforehand. Just about any dog can participate in agility sports, though Border Collies, Shetland sheepdogs, Labs and Australian shepherds are particularly good candidates.
When teaching your dog how to sit, hold a treat above him while he’s standing. As you allow the treat to move into his field of vision, your hand will slowly pass behind him. Your dog will look up as your hand passes behind his head. When a dog does this, it is natural for them to sit.
When you are house training a dog, you may want to use a crate. Always take your dog out consistently if you want to be effective at crate training. With crate training, your dog can be housebroken in no time.
Boredom Barking
If you are teaching ball-fetching, never chase your dog to get the ball away from him. He must always bring it to you because you are in charge. The dog will think of itself as the leader if you pick up the ball after it drops it. Instilling the idea of the dog bringing the ball helps it understand what it should be doing while fetching.
Pay attention to boredom barking. Dogs that are barking from boredom are because of owner flaws. Boredom barking means that your dog does not have an effective outlet to expend his mental and physical energy. Take the time to play with him and go for regular walks. If you aren’t available to spend time one-on-one with your pet, at least provide a selection of toys.
While teaching an old dog a new trick is certainly possible, you’ll want to be wary of any medical and health issues that your dog may have. If your pet has problems with their bones or muscles, you should not expect them to be very active. Training is good for keeping a dog’s brain active, which is helpful to old dogs. However, you should make sure these sessions are not causing any pain.
Use coins and a can to help you train. Use an empty can, such as a soda can to hold a few coins. Seal the can shut. Shake the can if your dog misbehaves. It will startle your dog causing him to stop his poor behavior. Eventually, your dog will get the idea that the behavior is not allowed. Never shake the can more than once, as multiple shakes will just desensitize your dog.
You should not take your problems out on your pet. Unless your dog has done something that warrants scolding, you should always take on a positive tone during your interactions.
Many dog owners are surprised to find that dog training is a much easier and faster process than they had expected. Therefore, should you start to feel frustration with your dog, put some of the following advice to work.
Triggers that tend to instigate inappropriate behavior in your dog can be diverted by redirecting his attention. If your dog is not friendly with other dogs, distract him when other dogs pass by. This will help him correlate the relationship between that stimuli and the positive things that come from it.
