Dog owners buy their pet expecting things to turn out well. Yet, all too often things don’t go as expected and the dog is given to an animal shelter. This doesn’t need to be the cause, though. Properly trained dogs are healthy and happy members of a family. Training your dog can be simple to do, if you use the following steps.
If you want to teach your pet to use a crate, first try these simple tricks. Many dogs are intimidated by the crate. To cure this, place something they enjoy in it and shut the door. Your dog will get excited at the prospect of the treat and soon be eager to enter the crate. When they go inside to get the bone, give them lots of positive reinforcement.
Try to walk in your dogs shoes before you criticize them. Sometimes a dog will be a slow learner, and this can be frustrating. Instead of being frustrated, try to think like your dog. Try to see the world through their eyes.
It takes a while for a dog to get comfortable in a crate. Don’t take it too fast; introduce the dog at his own pace. Once your puppy feels comfortable in the open crate, close the door and offer the dog a treat. Start off only putting them inside for 10 seconds, and when they seem okay with that, slowly increase the time they are inside. If your pet seems upset or agitated, you may need to slow down.
Don’t expect your dog to learn a command the first time you say it. It isn’t unusual to have to repeat a trick dozens of times before the dog understands. Being patient while trying the same task or command will allow your dog to understand it.
Make sure that your dog’s crate is the right size for him if you are going to use it to train him. Don’t forget, your puppy will grow. Choose a large enough crate to offer extra space beyond your dog’s dimensions. Your dog should be able to easily turn around and sleep without being overly crowded.
Avoid costly training tools such as shock collars. They don’t often work well and cost more than training methods which are conventional. If you start using these methods, your dog will not be responsive to anything else. These tools often do more harm than good.
When approaching a dog you’ve never met, approach them slowly and offer them the back of a hand to smell. This gives the dog the opportunity to recognize your scent and start to trust you. When a dog recognizes the scent, they won’t fear you and will follow commands.
You will be able to allow your dog to do more as it learns. You will find your dog to be more obedient and your dog will be happier. However, don’t allow your dog to have too much freedom because this could negatively impact your training.
During your training sessions, you should keep a close eye on the time. You will bore your dog if your spend a lot of time on just one thing. Only spend 10 minutes during the first couple of sessions.
Begin the puppy training process with a simple task. You’ll make strides quickly, and your dog will quickly learn the basics of acceptable behavior. In doing so, you will see better and more positive results.
If your pet is prone to jumping onto your lap, you should gently squeeze his paws after he does so. This communicates that the behavior is unacceptable and should be avoided. Although it may be uncomfortable, it does not hurt them when done lightly. They learn that if they want to avoid that discomfort, they need to refrain from jumping up.
When training your dog, make sure to have fun with him too. You can build a strong bond with dog by playing with the dog, and that in turn causes positive reactions during training. Having fun with your dog during training is one thing, but playing and having fun with your dog outside of training is also necessary.
Effective dog training requires instilling good behaviors from day one. Trying to change bad behaviors after the fact is far more difficult than teaching them the good ones right away. To avoid a dog that begs for table scraps, never give it table food to begin with.
Your dog needs to understand that ‘no’ means they need to stop what they are doing right away. You must find positive methods to reinforce your commands when training a dog. Saying ‘no’ does not teach your dog how to react. Tailor canine training to suit the dog and the situation.
To enforce good behavior when training your dog, remember to praise him regularly. Give treats, smile, and get excited so your dog will associate good behavior with a positive result. Do not reward unwanted behavior. This will cause your dog to think that he is doing something good.
Bond with your puppy by making sure he learns his name before anything else. Simply start by calling his name as often as possible. Once he learns his name, you can encourage him to come to you when called. It is a good idea to have your puppy learn these words first. It’s important to spend a lot of time playing with your puppy, this will help your puppy get to know you and learn to trust you. More advanced training will be much easier later if your dog trusts and loves you.
Expect the occasional setback when you are training your dog, but don’t give up! Your dog will need constant reinforcement, otherwise the behaviors and actions you have taught it may be lost. Food and shelter are lifelong needs for your dog, and training is no different.
