What Every Puppy Should Learn
Your dog wants to please you with his behavior, but he needs help figuring out what that behavior is. The capability is already available in the remote, however, a person must provide input to make it work properly. All dogs have the ability to be trained, but it is necessary to go about the task properly to attain the desired results.
When training a puppy to use a crate it is important to take your time and start with only a few steps at a time. When they’ve settled down with the gate open, slowly shut it and pass treats through the gate. Start off with small periods, for example 10 seconds or so, and gradually increase crate time. If the dog becomes agitated, slow down a little more to make them more comfortable.
If you are attempting to crate train your dog, remember that it is a multi-step process. After they become used to each individual step and do not mind going inside the crate, try shutting the door and giving them treats with the door closed. Start off with small periods, for example 10 seconds or so, and gradually increase crate time. If your puppy gets upset, then you may need to slow down and have more patience with them.
Get your dog into a feeding routine. Train your dog to understand that you are going to remove their food bowl upon fifteen minutes of feeding them. This will establish a feeding schedule for your dog. Your dog will eat their food in the time that you have alloted.
When you do give your dog correction verbally, make those corrections short, sharp and to the point. Do not rant on at length to your dog telling them how they were bad. Just say “no” and show them what to do instead. When speaking to your dog, use a voice that commands respect.
You need to teach your dog right away that they should drop or back away from something when you say “leave it.” You can protect their safety and stop them from destroying valuables by teaching them to obey this simple command.
Use firm control to elicit desirable behaviors from your pet. When your dog obeys your command, try to keep them calm as you give them their reward. If you get excited, the dog will become excited and everything will be out of control. Try to stay as calm as possible during your canine training session.
If your dog is a jumper, squeeze his paws when he jumps on you to let him know he cannot do this any longer. Although it may be uncomfortable, it does not hurt them when done lightly. This will help them to stop this action immediately.
Do not tie a couple of dogs closely together. It is possible for the chains to become intertwined, and the animals can be hurt as they try to get free. Situations like this can cause dogs of various sizes to cause fatal injuries if not properly monitored. Always err on the side of caution.
Your dog requires at least one hour of exercise every day. Making sure that your dog gets enough exercise makes your training sessions a lot more effective and it will also encourage your dog to have good behavior. When your dog is exercised, he is also happy.
When training your dog, try to avoid reinforcing negative behavior. Don’t ever reward a dog that is behaving badly. For instance, it will be difficult or impossible to train your dog not to jump on people if you give your pet a friendly neck-scratch when he or she jumps on you.
When your pet hears you speak the word ‘no’, your dog must understand that a response is not expected. Stick to positive training methods, as they can help the most. Saying the word “no” will not aid in the training of your dog. All dogs are different and will respond to different training.
Be consistent with your puppy training to make sure your animal stays obedient to the rules it has been learning. Do not believe that just because you dog has graduated from obedience school that training is complete. Some dogs will revert back to negative behaviors if the training does not continue. For this reason, it is especially important to hold your dog to a strict disciplinary system.
Praise is key to reinforcing good behavior during training. Get excited, smile, and give treats to help your dog relate the good behavior to something positive. Negative behavior should never be rewarded because then, your dog will associate this bad thing with a positive reward, which will cause your dog to only continue this bad thing.
It is very easy to teach a pooch to roll over as long as you have some tasty treats on hand. The first step is a simple “lay” command. Then, hold the treat over your dog’s head and swipe it above and around his head, causing him to roll over. His nose will track that treat and his body will roll over. As he is rolling over, give the “roll over” command, and do this repeatedly until he can roll over with just the command and without the treat. Never become frustrated if it does not happen right away. Once he does learn how, he will be a celebrity among other dogs.
When you train your dog, remember to keep sessions short. In fact, 15 minutes is an optimal limit to have on each session to reduce frustration on your part and your dog’s. After each session, you should play with your dog, reward and praise it.
Once you have worked with your dog and taught him what you want him to know, you just need to practice these skills. Dogs like to please their owners, and owners like to see dogs being obedient.
